Pique jewellery became very popular in Victorian times with large amounts being produced in Birmingham in the 1870s, made possible due to advances in production techniques. It was first introduced in Italy during the 1600s, but reached its heyday in the mid-1800s. The front of this tortoiseshell brooch is in perfect condition. However, there is a chip to the rim at the back of this brooch as can be seen in the photo. This chip cannot be seen from the front of the brooch when worn, however, there is a small crack visible.
